Fort Jackson South Carolina

Fort Jackson South Carolina

Fort Jackson, located in Columbia, South Carolina, is one of the largest and most active army training facilities in the United States. Originally called “Camp Jackson,” this army base opened in 1917 was named after President Andrew Jackson who was born in the border region of North and South Carolina. Camp Jackson was upgraded to “Fort” status by the US government in 1940. The site was chosen by the army specifically for its sandy soil and temperate climates.  Today, Fort Jackson spans 52,000 acres and graduates thousands of army student, houses thousands of soldiers and their families and employs thousands of civilians!  The army has continued to build and improve the base and now is even home to the Palmetto Falls Water Park open to the surrounding residents!

Fort Jackson is located in the heart of the Midlands of South Carolina (midway between New York and Miami).  It was incorporated into the Capitol city of Columbia in 1968 and continues to have a significant impact on the economic areas surrounding the Fort.

One of the largest parts of Columbia that benefits from the presence of Fort Jackson is the area called “South East Columbia.”  This would be the closest living, shopping and working area to the Fort.

Other areas that are convenient to Fort Jackson and often chosen residences for civilians working on the Fort are:  Downtown Columbia, Forest Acres and North East Columbia. Any homes in theses areas are going to be within a reasonable driving distance of Fort Jackson.

The Fort can be easily accessed by I-26, I-20 or I-77 with the main entrance to Fort Jackson at EXIT #12 off of I-77.
